Behind the Sounds: Wouldn’t Be Nice
Jul 7th, 2009 by Robert Cummings

If you’re into iconic 60’s pop music like I am, the Beach Boys “Pet Sounds” record is something to obsess over. So in preparation for the Brian Wilson concert tomorrow at Tempodrom in Berlin, here’s a very cool video on the making of “Wouldn’t It Be Nice”.

Classic Footage of “So What”
Nov 18th, 2007 by Robert Cummings

Here’s some classic footage that you don’t get to see to often. It’s the Miles Davis Quintet augmented with a trio of trombones playing “So What” from the “Kind of Blue” album. Probably everybody who’s listened a bit of jazz knows this album, it’s was one of my very first introductions to jazz way back when.

Cannonball wasn’t with the band on this data, but there are concise and very elegant solos from Miles and Coltrane. It’s interesting to watch the facial expressions on Miles and Coltrane while they solo, very concentrated, very succinct. And man did those men ever know how to smoke a cigarette with cool detachment!

Keith Olbermann Special Comment: 11/05/07
Nov 6th, 2007 by Robert Cummings

I’ve tended to avoid the political on this blog but there comes a time when issues become so threatening to the common good (and common sense) that they enter the private domain of each and every one of us. And in this instance it involves US American politics, not European or Canadian, so why does this involve me? Simply because the USA in its current executive political incarnation is threatening to erode fundamental tenets that western civilization has fought to achieve over three thousand years. So this involves all of us “westerners”.

On 5 November 2007, Keith Olbermann’s Special Comment on MSNBC was absolutely vitriolic in his criticism of the Busheviks’ handling of Daniel Levin, former acting assistant attorney general for the Bush administration in 2004. Daniel Levin underwent waterboarding at an American military facility to help determine whether or not it is torture. In his verdict, there could be no questioning it as not being torture. In contrahending his superiors (failing to toe the line), he was dismissed by Alberto Gonzales. Yet the fallout to this has shown that it is not only Republicans whom not to trust, but also Democrats, as proven by the yellow bellies of Senators Feinstein and Shumer. Hideous humanity.

Olbermann is the last bastion of mainstream political commentary, beyond him there is nothing but vacuous toe-the-line journalism in thrall to the American regime. Watch and decide for yourself.

Wikiality
Aug 4th, 2006 by Robert Cummings

For those of you yet to be exposed to advanced concepts such as wikiality and truthiness, here’s Stephan Colbert’s introduction to the former:

Of course, Stephen Colbert will be forever remembered for his direct and very ballsy comic put-down of George Bush and Washington at the White House Correspondent’s Association Dinner in 2006. I imagine most everyone has seen this by now, but if you haven’t, go here.
